CNN vanishes from TV screens in Beijing

BEIJING (Reuters) -- China shut down access to U.S. satellite news channel CNN for many Beijing residents on Wednesday ahead of the 10th anniversary of the bloody suppression of the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests on June 4.

"The CNN screen went black at around 5 p.m. on June 1," an employee at the Beijing Hotel, which overlooks Tiananmen Square, told Reuters. The managers of a housing complex put up a notice saying the Beijing broadcast authority had shut down CNN between June 1 and June 8 "for maintenance."

On Thursday, Cable News Network is scheduled to broadcast a one-hour special on the army's bloody June 4 crackdown.

One Chinese owner of a private housing complex said authorities suspended access to CNN because of the anniversary.
