Ralph Warren Smith passed away at the age of 75 in his home surrounded by love ones, early in the morning of June 19, 1999.
He was born in Salt Lake City on October 31, 1923, son of George Carlos and Lillian Emery Smith. He was the third youngest of 11 children, all but one of whom preceded him in death.Ralph is survived by his six children: Ralph W. Smith Jr. (Elizabeth), Lynn Dunfield (C. Robert), Marilyn Jepperson, Anne Kuepper, Russell A. Smith (Shannon), and Donna Lee Smith. His brother, Wilford E. Smith also survives him. He has 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ralph graduated from Granite High School in 1942 and married his high school sweetheart Ireta Payne in the Salt Lake Temple on December 21, 1942. After 50 years of marriage, Ireta died in 1992. Ralph was well known for his love of sports and his considerable skills in this area. He was selected as one of the most outstanding athletes at Granite High in both basketball and football, and went on to play football for the University of Utah. This was cut short by the Second World War. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard and served in the Philippines until the end of the war . He continued his active involvement in athletics as a high school basketball referee and for many years played fast pitch softball for church and city league teams.
For many years Ralph was part owner and operator of a Firestone service and tire center in Holladay. After retirement in 1988, and until recently, he worked for Cottonwood Mortuary (Memorial Estates).
Ralph was very active in the LDS Church and served as bishop of the Holladay 2nd Ward for seven years. He also served as scoutmaster for many years, as a high councilor and many other callings. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and found great happiness in his friends and family.
Services will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the LDS chapel located at 2065 East 4675 South. A viewing will be held at Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary located at 4670 Highland Drive on the preceding evening between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. and one hour prior to services. Interment, Holladay Cottonwood Cemetery.
