Vernal boy, 11, is critical after accidental shooting

VERNAL -- A Vernal boy was in critical condition at Primary Children's Medical Center Tuesday after being accidentally shot by a friend who was showing off his father's shotgun.

The accident happened about 11 a.m. Saturday at a home in Brush Creek, about 15 miles east of Vernal, Uintah County Sheriff's detective Keith Campbell said.Mark Woodard, 11, was severely injured when his 10-year-old friend accidentally pulled the trigger of the .410-gauge shotgun.

Woodard was taken to Ashley Valley Medical Center in Vernal and later transported by medical helicopter to Primary Children's.

Uintah County Sheriff Rick Hawkins called the accident "tragic" and said that adults with guns in their homes should teach children about gun safety.
