Agency finishes draft EIS, sets heliskiing meeting

The U.S. Forest Service has completed a draft environmental impact statement regarding the renewal of a permit for helicopter access to skiing in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest.

Wasatch Powderbird Guides is seeking renewal of a permit that expired two years ago that allows the company to use helicopters to deposit skiers atop backcountry mountain slopes. That practice, commonly called heliskiing, has drawn criticism from environmentalists.The draft EIS is available at the Salt Lake Ranger District, 6944 S. 3000 East. Beginning Wednesday, it will also be available at www.fs.fed.us/wcnf.

The Forest Service has also scheduled an open house at the Whitmore Library, 2197 E. 7000 South, on July 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m., where the public can review the documents.
