CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) -- Police killed a man in a shootout outside the police station early Wednesday and then found the bodies of three children in his pickup truck.
Castle Rock Police Chief Tony Lane said the shootout happened about 4:30 a.m. when a man pulled up to the station in a white pickup, got out and started firing into the one-story brick building, shattering one of the windows.Officers returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman, Lane said.
Moments later they discovered the bodies of the three girls, ages 7, 8 and 10, inside the cab of the truck, Lane said.
The truck was riddled with bullets, but authorities did not say how the girls died. The chief said their mother, who was estranged from their father, had called police hours before the shootout, concerned about the girls' safety. She mentioned that her husband had suicidal tendencies, Lane said.
Castle Rock is about 25 miles south of Denver.
