On the tour: The LPGA Championship, which began in 1955, is the second-oldest tournament in LPGA history, surpassed only by the U.S. Women's Open. ...Pak won her first tournament of the season last week. ... Karrie Webb has finished in the top 10 in her last 16 tournaments and leads the tour with five victories. ...U.S. Open champ Juli Inkster can become only the second woman to win all four majors with a victory.

On the tour: Miller Barber is the only player to have played in all 16 Players Championships. He will be making his 17th consecutive start this year.

Last year: J.P. Hayes won the Buick Classic at Harrison, N.Y., beating Jim Furyk with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff.

Last week: Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open title by one stroke over Phil Mickelson at Pinehurst, N.C.

On the tour: South African Ernie Els won wire-to-wire at Westchester in 1996-97. Els withdrew last year because of an injured back.


Lehigh Valley Open

Site: Center Valley, Pa.

Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.

Course: Center Valley Club (6,904 yards, par 72).

Purse: $225,000 (Winner: $40,500).

TV: None.


Bruce Summerhays: After shooting his best round of the year in last week's final round (65), the Heber City resident shot one of his worst rounds of the year, a 77 at the Southwestern Bell Dominion. He recovered to shoot a 68 and 71 for a 216 total, which left him in a tie for 40th place and earned him $4,950.


Mike Weir, Dick Zokol and Keith Clearwater all missed the cut by two strokes at the U.S. Open after each shot rounds of 73-76--149.
