Thousands take on Kasparov via Net

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of chess enthusiasts are awaiting the response of world champion Garry Kasparov, who challenged the world to a game in cyberspace.

Kasparov opened the tournament Monday, moving his white king's pawn two spaces forward to E4. Microsoft's Gaming Zone, the Web site acting as host of the tournament, immediately began fielding countermoves from around the world and registered more than 2 million hits for the day.
