Captive-born killer whale gives birth to a third calf

ORLANDO, Fla. (Reuters) -- A killer whale whose own birth made history 13 years ago has given birth to her third calf at the SeaWorld marine park in Florida, park officials said Wednesday.

The mother whale, Kalina, gave birth late Tuesday in the SeaWorld stadium's main pool after nearly two hours of labor. The baby whale instinctively swam to the surface for its first breath of air moments later. It was the third calf for Kalina, a 17-foot, 5,000-pound killer whale. SeaWorld said Kalina's birth in 1985 marked a milestone in killer whale breeding and made international headlines because she was the first killer whale to be born and thrive in captivity.
