Gun permits enhance safety

Some level-headed lawmakers have argued there is no problem with allowing concealed-carry permit holders to carry guns into schools. This is a supportable position, since there has never been a case where such gun holders have used those guns to cause any school violence or any other crime.

The Deseret News editorial board chose to ridicule this position, resorting to ad hominem attacks on Second Amendment supporters, calling them "zealots."Indeed, the logical position that is supported by scientific study (by John Lott of the University of Chicago, among others) is that having guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens reduces crime. I personally do not possess a gun, nor do I think I will ever own one, but I am grateful to those skilled gun holders who legally help to reduce crime, whether by deterrence or by direct action.
