WASHINGTON, UT--Merla Bishop Allen, 87 of St. George, Utah passed away Tuesday evening, June 22, 1999 in Washington, Utah.
She was born July 24, 1911 in Hinckley, Utah to Edwin Francis and Lillian Clark Bishop. She was the oldest of their 10 children. Merla spent her younger years in Delta and then the family moved to Prove. She completed her elementary through high school and then attended the University of Utah. She paid her way through college by working for Mrs. Ballard, taking care of the home and tending Apostle M. Russell Ballard. After college Merla taught elementary school for seven years.On May 27, 1938 Merla married Richard M. Allen in Santa Ana, California. They were later sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple May 9, 1959. They made their home in Los Angeles and Upland, California, Boulder City, Nevada, and then moved to Van Nuys, California where they lived for 29 years. In 1978 they moved to St. George. Richard and Merla were married 61 years. Merla was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the Lord. She always accepted her callings willingly and served to the best of her ability. One of her favorite callings was chorister in the Primary. She had a way about her that could make the children sing with all their hearts. Merla was a wonderful wife and mother. She was dedicated to her children, always teaching them right from wrong. Her greatest gift to her children was the wonderful example she set. She emphasized how important getting a good education was. She loved to read, darn, and enjoyed music. She was a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. Before she got married, she was dedicated to helping her mother raise her younger brothers and sisters.
Merla is survived by her husband, Richard of St. George; her four children: Gary Ross (Kathy) Allen of Sandy, Utah; Janet Lynne (Stephen) Bradford of Claremont, California; Nancy C. (David) Robinson of Bloomington, Utah; and Robert Lee (Theresa) Allen of Reseda, California; brothers: Ralph and Clemont Bishop; sisters: Jenny Greenwood and Beth Jensen; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Mark, Deal, Dean, Lewis, and Ross Bishop; and an infant son, Richard William Allen.
The family wishes to thank the kind care given by Kathy McKean and her wonderful staff at the Comfort Cottage in Washington.
Funeral services will be Monday, June 28, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the St. George LDS 12th Ward, East Stake Center, 449 S. 300 East. Visitations will be Sunday evening from 6-7 p.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary, 300 W. St. George Blvd. and at 10 a.m. Monday at the Stake Center prior to services. Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary, 673-4221.
