The names of all the missions of the Church were changed June 20, 1974, according to an article in the July 6, 1974, Church News. The Missionary Department an-nounced that the changes -- naming all missions after a state or country, followed by a city -- were done "to make [missions] more easily identifiable with the area they serve," according to the article.

Announcement of the name changes for missions was made at the seminar for new mission presidents held in Salt Lake City June 27, 1974.

The action followed the changing of the names of stakes Churchwide on Jan. 14, 1974. Stake names were also changed to reflect a consistent style identifying them with geographical areas.
