I was shocked by the attitude of the Deseret News editorial staff concerning the issue of school uniforms. They rely only on statistics to back school uniforms; they assume that if school uniforms are supported by parents, they must be supported by the students wearing them. Frankly, statistics aren't everything; and the wide majority of students vehemently disdain uniforms, myself (an incoming high school senior) included.
I am seriously afraid of uniforms because I know what such material conformity leads to. I have seen in history that such homogeny leads to sexual, racial, and religious uniformity, excluding differences.Remember what Supreme Court Associate Justice Abe Fortas said: "In our system, state-operated schools may not be enclaves of totalitarianism. Students in school as well as out of school are 'persons' under our Constitution."
