Envision Utah won't get cash from wary Layton

LAYTON -- The City Council has decided it won't contribute to the operating fund of Envision Utah.

At its June 3 work meeting, the council agreed it didn't feel comfortable in giving Envision its requested $5,315 donation. Envision Utah is a private-public partnership seeking to manage the state's exploding growth rate.Mayor Jerry Stevenson said he's not sure the group isn't creating another level of government.

"We need to approach it carefully," he said.

Councilwoman Debra Ledkins isn't convinced the approach of Envision Utah is right for Layton. "I don't think that's the way to handle growth here," she said.

Layton's leaders said its planned residential unit development projects are probably having the same effect Envision Utah is looking for. They also said the group is still too Salt Lake County-oriented.
