CEDAR CITY (AP) -- Gov. Mike Leavitt told Girls State delegates to participate as much as possible during their weeklong mock government and do the same as they go through life.
"Those who sit on the sidelines are liabilities, not assets," he said Monday as the annual event got under way at Southern Utah University.Leavitt said many of the state's and nation's future political leaders would emerge from among the 350 Girls State delegates.
Girls State Gov. Anneliese Oswald of Orem told the delegates this will be the "coolest week of your life."
She encouraged them to "run for every office imaginable" and to get involved.
The event is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
