The swim bus began its route Wednesday, June 9.The school bus picks up children at 12:30 p.m. in front of City Hall and takes them to the American Fork recreation center pool. The cost is $2. Children are brought back to City Hall at 3:30 p.m. The program will run every weekday until the end of August.


The Town of Cedar Hills is looking to hire five firefighters and five emergency medical technicians. Applications are available at the town office at 4393 W. Cedar Hills Drive.

Applicants for the firefighter positions must be 21 and hold a valid driver's license. Emergency medical technicians must be at least 18 and be certified. All applicants must reside within the town and have no criminal record.


String students ages 6 to 18 are invited to attend the Timpanogos String Camp at Mt. Ridge Junior High School, Aug. 2-12.

Beginning string students will receive 45 minutes of instruction a day. Elementary and junior orchestras will receive instruction from 9 a.m. until noon and senior orchestra members will attend rehearsals and sectionals from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. daily. Orchestra auditions will be held June 26 from 9-11 a.m. at Mt. Ridge Junior High. Tuition is $110 to $160. For more information contact Anne Hill at 785-2150.


City officials have signed an agreement with the Utah National Guard to help build a new gymnasium in the new armory at 1000 S. Geneva Road.

Orem will pay $193,351 for the basketball and volleyball area in exchange for being able to use the gymnasium for adult and youth recreation programs year-round.


The Neighborhood Housing Services of Provo Inc. and Provo's Maeser Neighborhood will hold their "Paint Your Heart Out" event on Saturday, June 12, and Saturday, June 19.

The community is invited to the "Saratoga Splash," an all-day event Saturday with a fishing tournament at 6 a.m. At 8 a.m. there will be a 5K race that begins at 901 S. Saratoga Drive and will wind around Redwood and Saratoga roads; pre-registration is $10 and is required by Thursday. Race day registration is $15. Call Jill Evans at 766-8376 for more information.

Other events throughout the day are free and include a volleyball tournament, a boat show, an arts and crafts show, pony rides, games and a magic show. Evening events include a hypnosis show at 8 p.m., dancing at 9 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m.


A youth track meet will be held at Spanish Fork High School Saturday, June 12. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the events start at 9 a.m.

The meet is open to all age groups, 8 through 18 years. Each event is 50 cents and a USA Track and Field membership card can be puchased at the meet for $12. Participants do not have to belong to a track club. For more information, call Mark Low at 221-9646.


Funeral rites were held Tuesday for former Springville Police Chief Leland Bowers. He died June 4 of heart failure. He was 64.

Bowers served in that post from 1974 until 1995, when he retired. Prior to that, he worked for 16 years in Southern California.
