What started out as a simple jaywalking complaint Tuesday escalated into a foot pursuit when the culprit decided he was not going to be arrested.

A Salt Lake police officer saw the 41-year-old man jaywalking on State Street and Kensington Avenue (1520 South) at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. When the man dropped a small stash of drugs, he opted against capture by police and darted into traffic during rush hour on State Street, nearly being hit several times.

His luck grew worse when one of the motorists who had to avoid slamming into the man was an off-duty sheriff's deputy. The deputy chased the man and caught him about two blocks away.

A report said the man then adopted a "combat pose" and was deterred from his desire to fight with a dose of pepper spray.
