The "Journey's End," a sculpture to honor the handcart pioneers, will be dedicated at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at This Is the Place Heritage Park.
Donors L.D. and Mary R. Bowerman will present the sculpture to Gov. Mike Leavitt. And President Gordon B. Hinckley of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will dedicate the sculpture, the work of Utah artist Stanley J. Watts. The sculpture depicts a family in prayer and honors the memory of hundreds of handcart pioneers who exemplified courage and faith as they made their way across the country. Some 3,000 men, women and children started their westward journey by handcart between 1856 and 1860, park officials say.
The public is invited to the dedicatory program at the park, located near the mouth of Emigration Canyon.
