DESERET NEWS: A motion picture company is noting its golden anniversary -- first film firm to reach the 50-year mark -- and a Utah-made movie will figure in the celebration.
The company is Universal-International Pictures. "Six Black Horses,"starring Audie Murphy, Dan Duryea and Joan O'Brien, is the Utah production and will be released during the company's anniversary. As in the case of many other films produced in Utah by U-I over the years, "Six Black Horses" was made in the area around St. George. Zion National Park figures in the color western. This is only one of the many productions being released during the celebration, which is being celebrated all this year. The official birthday is June 1.
Utah's good-for-nothing deseret lands were good for something. Movie-makers found the barren lands, particularly the red rock country around Moab, perfect for their oaters. By the 1960s, the state had a solid hold on movie-making as a viable industry.
