DESERET NEWS: Nov. 22, 1963 DALLAS (UPI) -- President Kennedy was assassinated Friday in a burst of gunfire in downtown Dallas. Texas Gov. John Connally was shot down with him.
The President, cradled in his wife's arms, had been rushed in his blood-spattered limousine to Parkland Hosptial and taken to an emergency room. An urgent call went out for neurosurgeons and blood.The President, 46 years old, was shot once in the head. Connally was hit in the head and wrist.
Police found a foreign-make rifle. Sheriff's officers were questioning a young man picked up at the scene.
The President was conscious as he arrived at the hospital. Father Huber from Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church was called and administered the last rites of the church. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, who now becomes President of the United States, was in a car behind the Kennedys and Connallys. He was immeditely surrounded by secret service men until he could take the oath of office as President.
Stunned Americans glued themselves to television and radio stations as the tragic events of Dallas unfolded. The youngest and one of the most popular presidents, Kennedy had symbolized for many a potent "New Frontier" for America -- a "Camelot" restored. Despite the ever-present threat of atomic war, the Bay of Pigs confrontation with Cuba and other crises, he was instrumental in outlawing atomic tests, promoting unprecedented space triumphs. and leading America into an economically rosy period.
