NEW YORK -- Dawn Staley scored six points in overtime and Rhonda Mapp had 18 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Charlotte Sting to a 75-69 victory over the New York Liberty on Monday night.
Charlotte outscored New York 11-5 in overtime as the Liberty missed their first eight shots. Teresa Weatherspoon's 3-pointer and Vickie Johnson's steal and layup brought New York within 72-69 with 9.8 seconds left.But Staley sank two free throws and Mapp added one for the final margin.
Crystal Robinson, who led New York with 23 points, hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 64 with 5.2 seconds left.
Robinson faked Charlotte Smith off her feet and hit the game-tying shot from the top of the key. She finished 6-for-12 from behind the arc.
Guarded by Weatherspoon, Staley missed a leaning 10-foot jumper at the buzzer, sending New York to its third overtime in its last six games.
Charlotte, which has won five of its last seven games, trails New York by one-half game in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty (10-9) dropped into a tie with idle Detroit.
Staley and Andrea Stinson finished with 15 points apiece.
Johnson had 15 points and Sue Wicks added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Liberty, losers three straight games and five of their last seven.
Vicky Bullett added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Sting (10-10), who led 40-27 at halftime.
After two free throws by the Sting, New York went on an 8-0 run to open the second half.
