julieOrganizers for the Utah Short Film and Video Festival are calling for entries to be screened during this year's event, which will run throughout the month of October in the Salt Lake Art Center, 20 S. West Temple.

Now celebrating its 20th year, the festival is a national competitive event that features short films and video works in a variety of styles, forms and genres.

The absolute deadline for entries is Sept. 20. All submissions received by that date will be screened during the festival, though organizers are hoping for early submissions so they can determine how many consecutive weekends the event will run.

Works submitted to the festival must be 25 minutes or less in length and be in one of the following formats: 16mm film, 8mm, Hi-8, U-matic, VHS or Super VHS videotape.

Also, there are four divisions for judging: 16mm film, video, Super-8mm film and Young Media Artist (for film and videomakers age 18 and younger). All submissions for the Super-8mm film division must be in a videotape format.

Submissions can either be mailed to the Utah Film and Video Center, 20 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101, or brought in person to the center during its normal business hours (Monday-Friday, noon-5 p.m.).

Works longer than 25 minutes, or works that have previously been submitted to the festival, are ineligible for screening. There is also a $45 entry fee ($35 for works submitted in the 16mm format). That fee will help cover the festival's registration, screening, judging and return-postage costs.

In addition to entries, the film center is also looking for volunteer help for the festival, such as posting fliers around town.

For more information on the festival, contact the film center during its regular business hours at 534-1158. Entry forms and other information can also be downloaded on the center's Web site (www.ufvc.org).
