Ellen Walker of Salem recently submitted a letter to the editor stating that pedestrians do not have the "right of way" in Utah when crossing the street. This is incorrect.

To quote from the Utah driver's manual, "If a pedestrian is crossing the street in a 'marked' or 'unmarked' crosswalk, you [the driver] must yield the right of way until he/she has reached safety. In addition, any vehicle crossing a sidewalk must yield to all traffic on the sidewalk."Notwithstanding, Ms. Walker does make a good point. Drivers in Utah tend to ignore pedestrians. Certainly we are not in so much of a hurry that we cannot extend common courtesy to those in a crosswalk. It is, after all, the law.
