A photo taken from an office building south of Temple Square shows the western spires of the Salt Lake Temple with the Conference Center in the background as conference-goers gather during the 170th Semiannual General Conference Oct. 7-8, 2000. On this historic occasion, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the new center during the Sunday morning session. The dedicatory prayer was followed by President Hinckley leading members in the Hosanna Shout.
Some 30,700 people attended the dedicatory session, with more than 20,000 in the Conference Center and others in overflow seating in buildings on Temple Square and in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. The Church president called the occasion "an unforgettable experience."
This week's Church News contains news of the dedication along with reports on addresses by members of the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve, Quorums of the Seventy, the Presiding Bishopric and general auxiliary presidencies offering inspiration and guidance to more than 11 million members worldwide. Biographies of General Authorities granted emeritus status or released from the Seventy are included in this special conference issue.
