John Reese Hunter, 73, former state legislator and doctor of optometry, died Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 2000, in Salt Lake City after a long battle with cancer.
He served for 10 years in the Utah House of Representatives, representing District 18, and also served in many positions in the Utah Republican Party. Mr. Hunter also served as president of the Utah Idea Forum and once ran for the U.S. Congress.
A Salt Lake optometrist for many years, he retired from the profession last March. He received his degree from the Southern California College of Optometry.
He also had been a member of the Holladay Rotary Citizens Committee for the Protection of Property Rights and was editor of the Utah Independent newspaper.
He was a great lover of music, especially jazz, and enjoyed motorcycles.
Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 27, 11 a.m. at the Oakhill LDS Ward Chapel, 955 W. 4800 South. Friends may call one hour prior to the service and on Sunday, Nov. 26, 6-8 p.m. at the Cottonwood-Holladay Mortuary, 4670 S. Highland Drive. Burial will be in the Murray City Cemetery.
