Irving "Bill" McNulty, 82, a former University of Utah botany professor who helped establish Red Butte Gardens and the Arboretum, died in Salt Lake City on Nov. 25, 2000.

He served in the U. botany department for 40 years and was department chairman for eight years, retiring in 1987 as professor emeritus.

Mr. McNulty served as board member of the arboretum for 30 years and was instrumental in the establishment and success of Red Butte Gardens.

He was also included in the 1975-76 edition of Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans Bicentennial Edition in recognition of his outstanding service to the community and the state.

Mr. McNulty earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the U. and a doctorate in 1952 from Ohio State University.

He spent a year in a German POW camp during his service in World War II.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple. Friends and family may call at the mortuary one hour prior to the service.
