BENNETT RETIRES: Dick Bennett, who guided Wisconsin to its first NCAA Final Four appearance in 59 years, is retiring because of burnout.

He said he no longer had the drive or energy to continue coaching after 36 years.

The Badgers (2-1) are ranked 23rd and have high hopes for a Big Ten title run once Maurice Linton and Travon Davis, both serving NCAA suspensions for receiving extra benefits, return to the team next month.

The 57-year-old Bennett, who came to Wisconsin in 1995, finished with a career record of 453-258, including a 93-69 mark in Madison. The state has decided not to file criminal charges against former Rhode Island assistant basketball coach Jim Harrick Jr. for alleged expense account fraud, saying the school gave "tacit approval" to such practices.
