DARMSTADT, Germany — Three American teenagers went on trial Friday in the deaths of two motorists killed by large stones thrown onto a German motorway from a pedestrian overpass.

The youths, aged 14, 17 and 18, have admitted they threw the stones. They face jail sentences of up to 10 years each if they are found guilty. A verdict is expected before Christmas.

Two women age 20 and 41, driving separate cars, were killed in February after the football-size stones smashed their windows and sent the cars spinning out of control.

Five other people suffered minor injuries, and six cars were damaged.

The pedestrian bridge over the motorway where the crime happened is near a U.S. military community settlement called Lincoln Village where about 600 U.S. families live.
