Woodrow (Woody) Wilson Beck, 84, of Gunnison, Utah, died December 9, 2000, in Mayfield, Utah.
Woodrow was born November 7, 1916, in Centerfield, Utah to Newman J. and Stella Myrup Beck. He married his high school sweetheart, Gertrude Edwards Beck, June 10, 1936 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Woodrow has given a lifetime of service to his community, his church, his edu-cation career and his family. He graduated from Gunnison Valley High School, Snow College, and BYU. In all his school experiences, he was active and involved in sports with basketball being his favorite. His teaching/coaching career spanned 31 years in Ephraim, Nephi and Gunnison. He concluded his career with 10 years as principal of Gunnison Valley High School. He was the recipient of numerous state and local awards during his career.
Woodrow was an active member in the LDS church. He served as bishop's counselor, bishop, high councilman, and various other church teaching and leadership positions. He has spoken in over 400 funerals.
Woodrow was a leader in community activities. He served as a Gunnison City councilman and mayor. He helped establish the Jaycee Service Club in Gunnison and served as its first president.
Woodrow's hobbies and interests included spending time with family and friends, farming, buying new cars, horses, boating, traveling, camping, hunting, fishing, and enjoying musical performances and spectator sports.
He is survived by his children, Phil (Cheri) Beck, Benson, AZ; Eugene C. (JoAnn) Beck, Sugar Land, TX; Jeanette Beck, Idaho Falls, ID; Marilyn (Scott) Stewart, Gunnison, UT; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth (Harold) Christiansen, Mayfield, UT; Dona (Frank) Cooley, Cedar City, UT; brothers, Garth (Carol), Ogden, UT; Robert, Gunnison, UT; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Beck, Los Angles, CA; Earlene (Ted Clerf), Moses Lake, WA; Karma Beck, Centerfield, UT.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude; parents; brothers, Cyril, Weldon, and Duane; sister-in-laws, Geniel and Margery.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 12 noon in the Gunnison Stake Center, where friends may call on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Gunnison City Cemetery. Funeral directors are Magleby-Jensen Mortuary, Salina and Gunnison.
