The day after Thanksgiving, I decided to get up at the crack of dawn and brave the sea of anxious shoppers on this, the busiest day of the year. To my surprise, people were smiling as they rushed to find the items that were "a great buy." I passed baskets that were overflowing. I also saw some baskets that were left unattended as people ran up the aisle for one more item. . . . The other shoppers glanced at the parked baskets, but no one attempted to make off with anything.
As I waited in the mile-long check-out line, I chatted with a woman ahead of me. We were both looking for more fleece throws. She needed two more, I needed one. A young woman in the next line over heard our conversation. She reached in her basket and pulled out two coveted throws. Her comment was "I just need one." The woman closest to her reached over and got it. She held it for a moment, then turned and passed it to me.
When I got home, I heard about the fights and near riots at some of the other stores that morning. I just want to say Fred Meyer and the employees were wonderful and the shoppers, who were as weary as I was, reaffirmed to me that there are still good, kind, unselfish people in the world. Merry Christmas!
