The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has scheduled two workshops this month at the University of Utah's Marriott Library in which implementation of the American Inventors Protection Act of 1999 will be discussed.
Library spokesman Dave Morrison said the act contains "some of the most far-reaching changes to the U.S. patent system in nearly 50 years." Discussion on the Patent Office's electronic commerce initiatives are also on the agenda.
The Patent Office is currently conducting the seminars in various U.S. cities.
A workshop on the issue for attorneys and corporations is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The workshop for independent investors is slated for Friday, Dec. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Morrison said the educational sessions will focus on new patent office procedures implementing Request for Continued Examination; Patent Term Adjustment; Eighteen-Month Publication; and Inter Partes Reexamination.
Highlights of the electronic commerce segment will include how to access information about your patent application or any issued patents/published applications via the Internet; how to file a patent application online; and how the patent office protects your application information on the Internet.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on both days. The sessions will be held in the library's Gould Auditorium. For information call Morrison at 581-8394.
