Queen Elizabeth II bestowed a personal honor on a woman who has done significant charity work in Scotland — her daughter, Princess Anne.

The queen appointed Anne a Lady of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle on Thursday — St. Andrew's Day. St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland.

Anne becomes only the third woman to belong to the order in modern times. The order, which is limited to 16 members at a time, represents the highest honor in Scotland.
