ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — An airplane pilot who mistook a road for a runway has admitted having three whiskey bottles that police say were open in the cockpit of his small plane.

David Wayne Nickerson pleaded guilty Wednesday to possession of an open container of alcohol on a public road and negligent driving, both misdemeanors. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped a drunken flying charge, which carries no jail time.

Nickerson, 53, was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to enroll in alcohol counseling.
