Melvin Alma Weenig, age 85, passed away at home on Nov. 29, 2000 in Riverton, UT due to natural causes.

He was born in Riverton on February 1, 1915 to Christian Frederick Everdinus and Elizabeth Goudriaan Weenig. He married Georgia Henrietta Harmer in the Salt Lake Temple on March 14, 1940; they are the parents of four children: Paul Melvyn of Laguna Beach, California, Lloyd Alma of Provo, Utah, Karyn Vee Madsen (Joel) of Orem, Utah and Alan Harmer. Alan passed away as an infant and Georgia passed away after 33 years of marriage. He married Betty Boberg Peterson on November 22, 1974. She passed away May 10, 1996. He married Lois Roskelley Lewis on February 3, 1998 in the Jordan River Temple. He worked in the grocery business for 23 years in Ogden, Utah and Boise, Idaho and for 23, years as an appraiser and negotiator for the Idaho Department of Transportation in Boise, Coeur d' Alene and Pocatello, Idaho. Melvin's heart and soul were devoted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and serving others. He held many positions of ward and stake leadership in the Church everywhere he lived and was devoted to his work as sealer in the Jordan River Temple the last 16 years of his life. He worked diligently in the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver award for that service. Melvin's greatest joy was missionary work. He served as a full-time missionary to Japanese speaking people in Hawaii from 1937 - 1939 and then returned, following World War II, as president of the Central Pacific Mission, serving with his wife Georgia from 1945 to 1950. He served many part-time missions in several stakes, including one of his dearest loves, at the Bannock and Shoshone Indian tribes in Fort Hall, Idaho. He also served at Temple Square in Salt Lake City and in the Idaho Falls, Provo and Jordan River Temples. Additionally, he also served a full-time temple missions with his wife Betty to the Philippines and Korea and a welfare service mission to Japan. Melvin's heart and home were open to everyone he met - he was devoid of malice and prejudice and was consummately charitable. He loved gardening and gave away most of the products of his labors to family and neighbors. He possessed child-like faith, unwavering commitment to duty, unpretentious humility and genuine love. He so enjoyed being with family and friends and former CPM missionaries.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, sons and daughter and two step-children; 17 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Ron (Anne) Weenig and a sister, Lucille (Merrill, deceased) Christopherson and sister-in-law, Lucille (John, deceased) Weenig. His brothers Fred (Rayola), Harry (Evelyn) and a sister Norma (Elmer) Johns all preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 4, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Shadows 3rd Ward LDS Chapel, 2812 West 11800 South. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary,10600 S. 1700 E. and at the ward one hour before the funeral.
