Believe in prayer

Believe in the power of prayer. Believe in getting on your knees every morning and every night and talking with your Father in Heaven concerning the feelings of your hearts, and the desires of your minds in righteousness. . . . There is no power upon the earth like the power of prayer. — From regional conference, Oahu, Hawaii, Jan. 22, 2000

Christmas

Christmas is so marvelous as we remember Him who came as our Redeemer, as our Savior, as our Lord, as the Prince of Peace, the Holy One of Israel. He was the great Jehovah. He came as the great Messiah to bring salvation to all the world. . . . God be thanked for the gift of His Son who gave His life that we might live and that we might go on to eternal exaltation if we walk in harmony with His divine laws and His sacred covenants. — From sacrament meeting, East Mill Creek [Utah] 12th Ward, Dec. 26, 1999Future of the kingdom

What we [in the Church] have seen in the past just indicates something remarkable and glorious and wonderful for the future. I think no man living today can comprehend what it will become. There is no reason why it shouldn't go on growing. It must go on growing. It has to go forward to its accomplished purpose and the destiny which the Lord has set for it. Our job is to just keep moving forward. — From Church News interview, Nov. 2, 1999

Let us move this work forward

We are all in this together. Every man, woman and child who belongs to this Church is a part of this movement. Every man and woman has a responsibility just as serious in terms of their responsibility as is mine in terms of my responsibility to move this work forward. Now, let us go to it, roll up our sleeves and work and accomplish it and become as a city set upon a hill whose light cannot be hid from this world. — From Church News interview, Nov. 2, 1999Missionary work

The gospel is nothing to be ashamed of. It is something to be proud of. "Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, . . ." wrote Paul to Timothy. (2 Timothy 1:8.) Opportunities for sharing the gospel are everywhere. . . . The process of bringing new people into the Church is not the responsibility alone of the missionaries. They succeed best when members become the source from which new investigators are found. . . . Let there be cultivated an awareness in every member's heart of his own potential for bringing others to a knowledge of the truth. — From missionary satellite broadcast, "Find the Lambs, Feed the Sheep," Feb. 21, 1999

Prepare for temple blessings

I want to make a plea and emphasize it with all the power I have, that every man and woman in this great congregation determine within himself and herself that they will go to the House of the Lord and there partake of the peculiar blessings to be offered there.

I want every young man and every young woman who is here to resolve within their hearts that they will prepare themselves and keep themselves worthy to go to the House of the Lord and stand before Him, pure in heart, and worthy to receive His great blessings. — From member meeting, Guayaquil, Ecuador, July 31, 1999

Serve faithfully in the Church

If you will accept every call that comes to you within the Church, you will grow in a remarkable and marvelous and wonderful way. With responsibility comes growth, and the Lord will magnify you and make you equal to every responsibility which is given you. — From member meeting, Guam, Jan. 31, 2000

The Lord's purse

I keep on my credenza a widow's mite, as a constant reminder of the fact that the means we have come from the widow as well as the well-to-do, and that they become the purse of the Lord, and that we have a great and terrible responsibility in the administration of those funds because they are the Lord's funds and they are sacred to us. We want to be wise and prudent and careful in what we do, and still take care of the needs. — From Deseret News/Church News interview, Feb. 25, 2000

Validity of this work

If anybody ever doubted the validity of this work, he only need see what has come to pass, my brothers and sisters. When the saints were here they were a handful . . . but over the years this cause has grown. This work has moved over the earth in a majestic and marvelous way as the work of the Lord under His inspiration, guidance and direction. I bear witness that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ, and that this is Their work and that Joseph Smith, who walked these grounds years ago, was in very deed a prophet of the living God and spoke under inspiration that came from heaven in setting the foundation work of this Church and pointing its future. — From Nauvoo Illinois Temple groundbreaking, Oct. 24, 1999

Youth of the Church

As we look to the future, I see our young people in the Church. I see a lot of them. I see them all over. And I am absolutely enthusiastic about the quality of their lives, their strength, their goodness, their faithfulness. I haven't the slightest concern about the future of this Church as I see our young people. They study the scriptures. They go to seminary and institute. They pray about their decisions. They socialize among themselves in a wonderful atmosphere of faithfulness. They are on their way to becoming strong, and faithful, and able Latter-day Saints, who will deliver when they are called upon to do so. — From Deseret News/Church News interview, Feb. 25, 2000
