TAMPA, Fla. — Vincent Lecavalier scored two goals and Tampa Bay held Detroit without a shot in the first period as the Lightning beat the Red Wings 3-0 on Saturday night.
Tampa Bay's Dan Cloutier made 26 saves and preserved his first career shutout in his 95th NHL game by robbing Tomas Holmstrom with a sprawling save in the second period.
Lecavalier scored both of his goals in the opening period as the Lightning outshot the Red Wings 20-0 en route to a 3-0 lead.
It's the first time since at least 1960 that the Red Wings were held without a shot during a period, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Lightning held the New York Islanders without a shot in the third period of their game on Feb. 15, 1994.
Mike Johnson had three assists for Tampa Bay, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Detroit captain Steve Yzerman returned after missing 23 games. He hadn't played since undergoing arthroscopic surgery Oct. 16 to repair torn right knee cartilage.
