A long-forgotten Nazi swastika looms from a forest near the village of Zernikow, northeast of Berlin, in this aerial photo. The swastika was planted, using larch trees, by a local merchant in the 1930s during the Nazi era. It was overlooked during the East German era and rediscovered after German reunification in 1992. About 25 of the lighter-colored trees were chopped down by forestry officials Monday after the photo, printed recently in several German newspapers, caused a wave of protest.
