Winter recreation in the Uinta National Forest can be adventurous and fun but can also be hazardous and deadly.

The U.S. Forest Service's Uinta National Forest Service office offers these tips to better promote safety among winter recreationists who often share the same areas and routes:

Operate snowmobiles at a minimum speed near skiers, snowshoers and hikers. Maintain that speed well beyond those on foot.

Skiers, snowshoers and hikers should remember that snowmobile operators are generally not able to hear other approaching trail users. Common courtesy and respect will add to a positive experience.

Before you leave, notify a responsible person of your planned route of travel and time of departure and return. Be sure to check with that individual when you return.

Snowmobilers are not permitted in wilderness areas, such as Mount Nebo, Mount Timpanogos and Lone Peak.

Look for signs of recent avalanche activity and old slide paths, listen for sounds and cracks and be alert to changing snow conditions. Many weather factors affect the chances of a snow avalanche occurring: temperature, wind, storm and snowfall.

If in doubt, stay out of avalanche-hazard areas. Contact the Avalanche Forecast Center, 378-4833, for the latest update.
