The U.S. Postal Service has opened five new branches in Wasatch Front shopping malls to cope with the holiday shipping rush. The branches, at Fashion Place Mall, Valley Fair Mall, South Towne Mall, Cottonwood Mall and Provo Towne Center, will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Additionally, three Salt Lake post offices will have extended hours. Salt Lake City's main post office, at 1760 W. 2100 South, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The Holladay post office, at 2350 Arbor Lane, and the Cottonwood post office, at 6890 S. 2300 East, will extend hours to 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The airport post office, south of the main terminal, is open 24 hours a day, and Salt Lakers can call 1-888-ASK-USPS (275-8777) for information about the nearest branch and hours.

The post office offered tips for holiday mailings:

Always use complete address information, such as Ave., Blvd., and St.; correct directions, such as N, W, and SW; and the apartment or suite number.

Use ZIP codes, and don't guess if you don't know one. Call 1-888-275-8777 to access ZIP codes.

Select a shipping container that's strong enough to hold the contents, and use tape that is designed for shipping. When cushioning contents for shipping, use plain-air popcorn, shredded or rolled newspaper, bubble wrap or plastic foam peanuts.

The only addresses on packages for mailing should be the delivery and return addresses.

Packages that weigh at least one pound must be taken to the post office for mailing.

If you're writing to Santa, include a return address so Santa can write back.
