A weekend fire torched an abandoned Sugar House duplex.

Fire officials are calling the two-story, wood frame building at 2442 S. 900 East a complete loss. Because of severe structural damage, fire investigators hadn't entered the building Monday morning to determine the fire's cause or cost of the damage.

A police officer reported the fire at 7:22 p.m. Sunday, and fire crews arrived four minutes later.

"By the time our crews got there the thing was totally involved so they went defensive immediately," Scott Freitag, Salt Lake City fire spokesman, said. "There were crews still putting out hot spots on the fire until midnight."

No one was injured in the blaze, but a nearby tree did catch fire, and heat from the flames damaged the paint on a building nearby.

The building had been empty for several years, Freitag said.
