A railroad worker was in critical condition Tuesday morning after he was hit and dragged by a train Monday.

Shane Clayson, a signal maintainer for Union Pacific, was working on a crossing light at 1800 N. Warm Springs Road about 1:15 p.m. Monday, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Jack Rickards. "For some unknown reason, he stepped back 10 feet or so and stepped into the path of an oncoming train," Rickards said.

The Utah Railway engineer sounded the horn, Rickards said. But Clayson was struck by the train and dragged about 10 feet.
