State officials plan to push for a 36-hole golf course adjacent to the 2002 Olympic biathlon and cross country venue in Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Division of Parks and Recreation Director Courtland Nelson said he plans to ask Gov. Mike Leavitt and the Legislature to float $12 million to $13 million in revenue bonds to finance the facility.

The bonds would be repaid by golfers green fees, he told the Utah Travel Council recently.

Construction could start in the spring of 2002, and the course could be open by 2004.

The state park is already home to one 36-hole course, and there is an 18-hole private course nearby at the Homestead Resort.

Feasibility studies done for Parks and Recreation show a demand for 43,030 yearly 18-hole rounds of golf that cannot be serviced by the present courses. That demand could increase to 149,000 in 2011 as population in the area grows.
