About 20,000 utility customers on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley lost power Monday afternoon when a piece of lightning-protection equipment failed.

Dave Eskelsen, spokesman for Utah Power, said the outage started at 3:45 p.m. with a problem at the Oquirrh substation, 9200 South and 6000 West.

The disturbance also caused a line to go down at the terminal substation at about 400 South and 4700 West, Eskelsen said.
