The Utah Transit Authority has decided to offer Sunday service on its TRAX light-rail system for the next four Sundays.

TRAX trains will operate from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Dec. 10, 17 and 24 and from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Trains will travel every 20 minutes.

The usual $1 one-way fare will be charged. No additional bus service will be offered, however.

"It's very busy downtown right now. There's a lot of things to do, a lot of people that are shopping and doing different things along the line," UTA spokeswoman Carole Verschoor said of the decision to offer holiday Sunday service.

UTA could continue running TRAX on Sundays in the new year, but Verschoor said no decision has been made. She said UTA had expected to begin receiving revenue from the quarter-cent-per-dollar sales tax increase, passed by voters on Election Day, in April. But UTA has since learned it will not begin receiving that money until July, per the dictates of state law, she said.

The board's planning and development committee Monday discussed the possibility of increasing UTA's $1 fare in the near future but did not make a recommendation.
