Utahns with diabetes are eligible to receive a free 60-minute calling card by getting a diabetes eye exam if they are insured by a participating plan.
Participating health plans are part of the Utah Diabetes Partnership and include Altius Health Plans, American Family Care of Utah, Cigna Health Care of Utah, Deseret Mutual Benefit Association, Educator's Mutual Insurance Company, IHC Health Plans, Public Employees Health Plan, United HealthCare of Utah and Healthy U.
The 60-minute calling card program runs through Dec. 31.
Some 97,000 Utahns are estimated to have diabetes, with 34,000 of them unaware they have the disease. Without proper testing and treatment, those with diabetes are at very high risk of complications including loss of eyesight, kidney failure, amputation and even death.
