TIMBERRRRR! Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said he has agreed to be suspended by the NBA for his role in a secret deal with former player Joe Smith that violated salary cap rules.
Kevin McHale, vice president of basketball operations, agreed to take a leave of absence, Taylor said. Coach and general manager Flip Saunders will not be punished.
ARIZONA WOES: The NCAA reinstated Arizona forward Richard Jefferson, following a one-game suspension for accepting gifts from former NBA great Bill Walton.

NEW DEAL FOR DAVIE: Notre Dame coach Bob Davie signed a five-year contract, two days after the Irish were invited to their first major bowl — the Fiesta Bowl — in five years.
Davie's contract was scheduled to run out after the 2003 season, but there was speculation he could be fired if the Irish didn't play well this season.
Hockey
RELEASED: Paul Coffey, the second highest scoring defenseman in NHL history and a teammate of Wayne Gretzky on three Stanley Cup champions, was waived by the Boston Bruins.
Snowboarding
WORLD CUP: Frenchman Nicolas Huet had a successful weekend in the first two parallel giant slalom races of the snowboard World Cup season Dec. 2-3 at Ischgl, Austria.
Huet captured first Saturday and second Sunday. Dejan Kosir of Slovenia was Sunday's winner. Karine Ruby of France took first Sunday and third Saturday on the women's side. Austrian Lidia Trettel finished first on Saturday.
