Newspaper racks along Sandy streets will now have to meet guidelines regarding color, size and placement.
The City Council unanimously approved an ordinance last month that will regulate the newspaper distribution racks, which distribute newspapers, renters guidebooks and automobile sales brochures. The ordinance is modeled after a number of similar ordinances in larger cities such as San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Within a month, the City Council will also decide exactly how much to charge the owners of the racks. Council members expect that the fee will be approximately $25 and will help cover the expenses involved with staff members having to process rack requests.
