I have been a subscriber to the Deseret News for about 34 years. I read it regularly before that when I was growing up in a family that valued newspapers. In earlier years, editorial comment was reserved for the editorial section of the paper. Now Lee Benson and Gib Twyman seem to be at liberty to editorialize all they want in what used to be the news section.
I yearn for the likes of Les Goates. While his column was of the special interest variety rather than opinion, it was always in good taste, as I recall. It did not have a mean tone about it. It was always nice to read his work. What has happened?
I don't believe that Al Gore is any less patriotic than George W. Bush. Yet, to read Twyman and Benson, Gore and his supporters are not only stupid and unpatriotic; they are demons.
I was especially sickened by Benson's recently putting Al Gore in the same category as Saddam Hussein, Yasser Arafat and Slobodan Milosevic. Such print is tacky for what ought to be a classy newspaper.
