NEW YORK (Bloomberg) — AT&T Corp., the biggest U.S. cable-television company, said it has 500,000 customers for phone service transmitted over cable-television lines. That's at the low end of AT&T's target of 500,000 to 650,000 subscribers by January.
The company added 100,000 customers for the service since Oct. 26, said spokesman Steve Lang. Improvements in installing the service helped AT&T reach its target, the New York-based company said. It wasn't more specific.
AT&T has spent more than $100 billion acquiring cable-TV companies and is using the cable connections to offer phone, Internet and other video services.
On Oct. 25, AT&T said it will split into three separate companies and create a tracking stock for the consumer phone business, in an effort to boost its stock price. AT&T shares fell 38 cents to $20.31 in early trading. The stock had fallen 59 percent this year, the worst performance in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
