PROVO — Miniature forklifts designed by students in the electronics engineering department at Brigham Young University matched virtual wits with one another Wednesday in the annual Mechatronics competition in the Crabtree Building. The tiny computerized machines had to recognize and follow the lines on a platform course to boxes on pallets, lift and carry the boxes to definitive destination points and avoid obstacles and other forklifts along the way. Eight teams — students of Professor Richard Helps — competed for praise and cheers from a crowd of onlookers gathered for the event. "This competition represents hundreds of hours of work in one semester," Helps said. "And each year, the machines are more efficient and better designed."
