Two months after Brian Tarbet pinned on his brigadier general's star, the Kaysville lawyer has added a second star, signifying his brevet promotion to major general as head of the Utah National Guard.
Tarbet, 51, was designated last January to be the next adjutant general. He assumed the new duties Sept. 23 while still a colonel. He received his brigadier general's star Oct. 1.
But because the adjutant general is supposed to be a major general, Tarbet was approved to wear the second star, which was pinned on in a ceremony Tuesday by both Tarbet's wife and mother.
"This pinning stars on General Tarbet has become a routine thing for us," said Gov. Mike Leavitt, who selected the Cache County native to be adjutant general. The term is for six years.
Tarbet previously was a member of the Utah attorney general's staff, representing the state Tax Commission. Before that, he had a private law practice.
While Tarbet is serving as a brevet two-star general, he will receive the pay of a brigadier general. He will be eligible to be appointed permanently as a major general in October 2002.
